The Biblical Canon of
Codex Claromontanus

The Codex Claromontanus was discovered in the 16th century by Theodor Beza and is named after the Clermont-en-Beauvaisis monastery that he found it, located in northern France.  It is dated palaeographically to the 5th or 6th century, but contains a catalogue that was inserted into it that is dated to the early 4th century (ca. 325 A.D.).  This catalogue, known as the Catalogus Claromontanus, is a list of the Old Testament and New Testament canons. The Old Testament canon is nearly identical to the modern Catholic canon including the deuterocanon (Protestant ‘Apocrypha’), but also includes 4 Maccabees.  The New Testament list is quite similar to the modern canon, but omits Philippians1 and 2 Thessalonians, and Hebrews.  On the other hand, it includes several works no longer considered canonical including the Epistle of BarnabasThe Shepherd of HermasActs of Paul, and the Apocalypse of Peter.
