The Biblical Canon of
Rufinus of Aquileia

The Canon list of Rufinus of Aquileia is found in a passage of his Commentary on the Apostles’ Creed (Commentarius in symbolum Apostolorum), which he wrote around 404 A.D.  Rufinus’s Old Testament closely corresponds to the contents of the Jewish canon. He does not specify which books are included within the title Jeremiah, though he likely included Lamentations, Baruch and the Epistle of Jeremiah.  He does include the Deuterocanonical books as well, but places them in a separate category of books that he called ‘ecclesiastical books’ which he designated as non-canonical but useful to the church.  His New Testament canon, which is similar to the modern canon, also included a list of ‘ecclesiastical books’.  His list of NT ‘ecclesiastical books’ contains the Shepherd of Hermas, the Judgment of Peter, and the Two Ways (most likely a referance to the Didache).
