The Biblical Canon of
Codex Claromontanus
The Codex Claromontanus was discovered in the 16th century by Theodor Beza and is named after the Clermont-en-Beauvaisis monastery that he found it, located in northern France. It is dated palaeographically to the 5th or 6th century, but contains a catalogue that was inserted into it that is dated to the early 4th century (ca. 325 A.D.). This catalogue, known as the Catalogus Claromontanus, is a list of the Old Testament and New Testament canons. The Old Testament canon is nearly identical to the modern Catholic canon including the deuterocanon (Protestant ‘Apocrypha’), but also includes 4 Maccabees. The New Testament list is quite similar to the modern canon, but omits Philippians, 1 and 2 Thessalonians, and Hebrews. On the other hand, it includes several works no longer considered canonical including the Epistle of Barnabas, The Shepherd of Hermas, Acts of Paul, and the Apocalypse of Peter.
