The Biblical Canon of
Codex Vaticanus
The Codex Vaticanus is a manuscript of an early Greek Bible, containing the majority of the Greek Old Testament (Septuagint) and the majority of the Greek New Testament. It is one of the four great uncial codices along with Codex Alexandrinus and Codex Sinaiticus, which are the earliest and most complete manuscripts of the Bible in existance. Most current scholars consider Codex Vaticanus to be one of the most important Greek witnesses to the Greek text of the New Testament, followed by Codex Sinaiticus. The codex originally contained a virtually complete copy of the Septuagint (“LXX”), including the Deuterocanon, lacking only 1-4 Maccabees and the Prayer of Manasseh. The New Testament canon is lacking 1 Timothy, 2 Timothy, Titus, Philemon, and Revelation.
