The Biblical Canon of
Gregory of Nazianzus
The Canon of Gregory of Nazianzus is found within a poem by Gregory entitled Carmina Theologica in Book I, Section I, Carmen XII. Gregory says this list of books was given to illumine hidden things, to be nudged by the commands of God and to lead one away from earthly things. Thus this list was intended to promote piety, although it also served to give a list of genuinely inspired Scriptures to avoid faithful Christians being deceived by Gnostic, Arian, or Apollinarian texts. Gregory’s New Testament list does not include Revelation, although he does allude to it at the end of the Gospel of John.
