The Protoevangelium of James, also called the Infancy Gospel of James is a 2nd-century infancy gospel telling of the conception of the Virgin Mary, her upbringing and marriage to Joseph, the journey of the holy couple to Bethlehem, the birth of Jesus, and events immediately following. It is generally dated around 140 AD and has given many insight into the life of the Holy Family including certain questions that have arisen from the New Testament. While there are implicit suggestions and arguments can be made from the New Testament for Mary’s perpetual virginity, the Protoevangelium of James is the earliest surviving text to explicitly assert that Mary was a perpetual virgin, meaning that her virginity was not only intact prior to the birth of Jesus, but also during and afterwards. Despite the Protoevangelium of James itself being condemned by Pope Innocent I in 405, much of it’s internal theology was accepted by early orthodox authorities within the church and it has remained an important source of early Christian thought and has become a widely influential and early source of Mariology.
