The Biblical Canon of
Pope Innocent I

Pope Innocent I served as Bishop of Rome from 402-417.  During that time, he dealt with the seige of Rome by the Visigothic leader Alaric, as well as several heresies including PelagianismAs bishop of Rome, Innocent received a letter from Exsuperius, Bishop of Toulouse in southwestern Gaul.  In the epistle of Pope Innocent addressed to bishop Exsuperius of Toulouse, Innocent included a list of canonical Scripture (Ep. 6.7), which reaffirmed the lists of the Councils of Rome, Hippo, and Carthage and would later be canonized at the Council of Trent (1546).  His Old Testament list included the Deuterocanonical Books and his New Testament matches the modern canon.  Following this list of books, Innocent condemns any non-canonical writing that circulates under the name of an apostle.  He lists as Condemned WritingsAny other Gospels going under the name of: Matthew, James the less, Peter, John, Andrew, or Thomas.
